Screenwriting

A screenplay is a .script file in the Writing Studio: features, series, adaptations, Taiwanese and Hollywood layouts, delivery, notes with producers. The old Script Studio lives under "Legacy".

Use cases

• 01 Write a TV series: one folder per season, one file per episode There is no series/season/episode hierarchy in 4.0. Organise twelve episodes with folders and .script files, carry a cast and a planted thread across episodes, and read a season’s runtime in the manuscript table.
• 02 Bring an existing screenplay in: Final Draft, Fountain, Word, or a folder of drafts Final Draft .fdx, Fountain, RTF and pasted text become an editable .script; Word and PDF only become text files. The formats Slima actually accepts, two ways out when it can’t read yours, and six things to check afterwards.
• 03 Ask the AI to rework a scene, and review what it did The two ways to ask, the six things the AI can change in a .script, what it will not touch, and how a pending change appears on the line itself until you accept or skip it.
• 04 Handing the screenplay over: one episode, one season, or the whole book Which format for which recipient, which four fields the title page and page numbers come from, where the watermark and per-episode numbering hide, and the separate routes for one episode, a season and a whole book.
• 05 Write a feature film: two hours in one file A feature is a single .script file. Creating it and setting a target in minutes, where structure lives (a .beats board and the per-scene beat field), how the runtime estimate is built, and the one real reason to split the file.
• 06 Adapt your novel into a screenplay: what carries over, and what you rewrite There is no prose-to-screenplay converter. What does carry over from the novel, how to plan the episode split on a beat board, what a mixed book costs you, and how far the AI can actually take an episode.
• 07 Taiwan format or Hollywood: choosing by who receives it Which of the two formats for which recipient, every difference the reader sees on the page, why the choice belongs to the file, and what a flip converts — and what it leaves as you typed it.
• 08 Working with a producer or director: send the script, get the notes back A share link is read-only and your reader cannot comment on it. What the link shows, how Latest and Locked differ, why the byline is blank on purpose, and how to pin the notes you hear onto the line they were about.
• 09 Keeping characters and locations straight across twelve episodes The cast register builds itself from your character cues; a character sheet is a plain .md matched by name. How both work, why a capital letter splits a cast in two, and the only safe way to rename someone in all twelve episodes.
• 10 Plan a season before you write it: a beat board and a timeline A beat board holds the shape and your episode files; a timeline holds the chronology. What each one is for, what the board writes back into an episode, and an honest list of what neither of them tracks.

Writing a screenplay

• 01 Scene heading: interior/exterior, location, time Set interior/exterior, location and time on a .script scene heading row — and keep location names consistent now that the locations list is gone.
• 02 Enter and Tab: the element flow In a .script file, Enter and Tab move to the next sensible element type based on where you are and which format you're in. Both flow tables, the escape hatches, and how it works on a phone.
• 03 The script element types Every line in a .script file has a type: action, character, dialogue, parenthetical, transition, shot. What the six are, how you set one, and how each prints.
• 04 Action, transition and shot The three lines that aren't dialogue: how to write action, where the transition slot lives, and what each of the eleven shot types is for.
• 05 Dialogue and character autocomplete The cast list is now detected from dialogue. How the autocomplete orders it, how it predicts who speaks next, the extension badge, and how to add a parenthetical.
• 06 Flashback and special scenes How to mark a flashback, a dream, a montage or an intercut in a .script file — all of it with the heading's annotation field, the shot types and the transition slot. No special panel needed.
• 07 Format switch: Taiwan and Hollywood A screenplay has exactly two formats. Where the switch is, what's behind the gear, why the preview is the export, and how to read the runtime figure beside it.
• 08 Start a screenplay: create a .script file This shows you how to open episode one inside the Writing Studio, and how to bring a screenplay you have already written into Slima.
• 09 Opening a screenplay file: layout, toolbar, status bar A tour of every part of the screenplay editor — the three views, the three buttons bottom right, the row of numbers along the bottom, and where find and replace actually lives.
• 10 The outline panel: an episode by scene, by character, by location Open the screenplay's own outline panel and use it to move around an episode instead of scrolling through it.
• 11 Screenplay shortcut cheat sheet (and the slash palette) Every key that actually works in the screenplay editor, what / on an empty line gives you, and where the old Script Studio shortcuts went.
• 12 Splitting, merging, inserting and reordering scenes Cut one scene into two, fold two back into one, drop a new scene anywhere, and drag the running order into shape.
• 13 Scene-level notes: pinning a remark to one line of one scene Leave a note, a todo or a foreshadowing marker on a line of your screenplay, and find it again later.
• 14 Characters: the cast list your dialogue builds, plus the sheets you write With the character bible gone, screenplay characters split in two: a cast list derived from the character lines in every .script, and .md character sheets you write, matched by name. Covers per-scene cast chips, how renaming and deleting differ now, and the appearance matrix having no replacement.
• 15 How AI helps with a screenplay The seven field-level AI tools for a .script, changes reviewed in place on the page, right-click quick actions, Chapter Analysis on screenplays, and why the old Script Studio's coach no longer answers.

Structure & time

• 01 Multi-thread planning: beats for shape, timelines for time How to plan an A-story and a B-story now that storylines aren't records: shape on a .beats board, chronology on a .timeline, plus what to do without colour bars or an orphan filter.
• 02 Screenplay structure: acts and beats against files With one episode per file, structure sits at two levels: the season's shape on a .beats board, and each scene's beat on its scene card. Why the old structure dialog and act editor are gone, and how foreshadowing moved into notes.

Deliver & share

• 01 Delivery: exporting an episode as PDF, Word or Fountain A .script exports as PDF (Taiwanese or Hollywood), Word, Fountain, ePub and Markdown. Covers merging a folder of episodes into one PDF with watermark and page-number strategy, the three whole-book ranges, and exporting a multi-selection from the file tree.
• 02 Sharing a screenplay: which files, who can open it, for how long Turning a screenplay into a read-only link: the file checkbox tree and what can be ticked, Latest vs Locked versions, link-only vs password, expiry and copy permission, the byline, and why comments live inside Slima rather than on the link.

Legacy Script Studio

• 01 The old Script Studio: what still works, and how to move a project across Script Studio still opens existing projects but creates no new ones and its coach is off. Your two options, and exactly what a copy into the Writing Studio carries over.
• 02 My Screenplays: where your old work is, and how to open it again The Script Studio shelf is still there. How to reach it, why the entry disappears for some accounts, what the three tabs hold, and where to look when a screenplay seems to be missing.
• 03 Series → Season → Episode → Scene: the four levels inside an old project An old screenplay project hangs every scene on a four-level tree: series, season, episode, scene. 4.0 has no such tree. What each level holds, and what each becomes once you copy the project across.
• 04 The scene board: three views, the card, and what opens inside it Board, List and Timeline views, the Episode/Season and Compact/Detailed toggles, structure templates, everything a scene card carries, and the conflict level, storylines and stats revealed when a card expands.
• 05 The Plan view: six tabs holding an old project's planning Everything an old screenplay project planned lives in six Plan tabs: Planning, Characters, Storylines, Locations, Worldview, Notes. What each holds, and what each becomes after a copy into the Writing Studio.
• 06 The ⋯ menu on an old screenplay: back up, archive, delete, copy across Four actions live behind the ⋯ on a Script Studio card: Export Backup, Archive, Copy as new Writing Studio book, Delete. Renaming happens inside the book. Trash holds for 60 days.
• 07 "This script uses the legacy format": Upgrade and create a copy Very old screenplays open with a legacy-format prompt. Upgrading makes a copy suffixed -copy and keeps the original as a backup. It is a different thing from the Script Studio migration.
